The Labour Day weekend traffic campaign kept OPP officers busy on the final long weekend of the year.
Officers from OPP West Region's 13 detachments, including Perth OPP, laid a total of 2,426 charges, stemming from 2,577 traffic stops from Sept. 1 until Sept. 4.
This year's campaign focused on the 'Big Four' bad driving behaviours: aggressive driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving, and impaired driving. They are the leading contributors to death, injury and property damage on Ontario roads and highways.
Perth County OPP led the way for speeding charges among all 13 detachments, with 269. The Perth detachment also charged seven people with impaired driving and six individuals with failing to wear a seatbelt.
West Region statistics for the long weekend:
- Speeding: 1,450 charges
- Failure to wear a seatbelt: 128 charges
- Distracted Driving: 31 charges
- Impaired Driving: 54 charges
