Stratford police officers, on the first day of school in the area on Wednesday, clocked a 39-year-old minivan driver travelling 51 km/h over the posted limit shortly before 9 a.m., not far from Downie Cental Public School.

The city police service, which also covers the communities of St. Marys and Perth South, were paying special attention to school zones as youth made their way back to the classroom, and there was an increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

At 8:55 a.m., police stopped the driver on Line 20, in Perth South. The area has a reduced speed limit during school hours, with marked signs indicating a speed limit of 60 km/h and flashing lights on the signs.

The driver of the minivan was identified as a Stratford resident. She is charged with stunt driving under the Highway Traffic Act,  which includes a mandatory 30-day driver’s license suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment. The driver is scheduled to attend court on Oct. 16.

Stratford police remind everyone of the importance of slowing down in and around school zones, and of being aware of the extra  hazards in these areas. By doing so, children can be kept safe and feel safe while travelling to and from school, police said.
