WINGHAM – Tough winter weather was a factor when a school bus left the road in Huron County during a school run Tuesday morning.
Huron OPP Const. Craig Soldan told StratfordToday that the bus, carrying seven students, left the road, went into a ditch and then landed in a private laneway, near Wingham.
One student was flown by OrngAir to London due to a possible fracture and head injury, two other students and the bus driver were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries, he said.
The collision, at 8:30 a.m., occurred on Clyde Line between Cardiff Road and Browntown Road in Morris-Turnberry Township.
The bus was northbound at the time en route to Maitland River Elementary School, in Wingham.
Significant snow fell overnight in the region impacting roads and travel in many parts of Huron and Perth counties.
Buses were not cancelled in Huron County.
Chera Longston, communications manager with the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB), told StratfordToday that bus companies make the decision about whether to cancel routes "but we support them in those decisions."
AMDSB staff are supporting impacted families and students and the investigation as needed, Longston said.
Clyde Line was closed for several hours for emergency responders and bus removal.
Police said the investigation is ongoing into the circumstances causing the bus to leave the roadway. The bus driver has not been charged.
