Warriors roar back to win provincial gold medal

St. Michael Warriors fought back from a big deficit with a stunning comeback in the gold medal game at the OFSAA A/AA boy's hockey tournament.

Trailing 4-0 deep into the third period against top ranked St. Mary's College, the Warriors rallied to win 5-4 in overtime on Thursday. 

St. Mary's College, from Sault. Ste. Marie, were 23-1 entering the tournament and won all three of their preliminary games. 

The Warriors, ranked fifth, won 1-0 over Paris High School, also in overtime, in the semifinal.

St. Michael beat Denis Morris 4-3 in overtime in the quarterfinal. 

St. Michael finished first in their group, beating Regiopolis-Notre Dame 6-2 in the last of three round-robin games to clinch first place. They also beat John Diefenbaker 2-1 and tied Crestwood 2-2. 

The Warriors entered the provincial tournament in St. Catharines as WOSSAA champs after winning the Huron-Perth championship.
