Jacqueline “Jean” Anne Centen, of Stratford, age 68, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at London Health Sciences Centre, University Hospital Campus. Born in Bowmanville, ON, dear daughter of Trix (née Vanderlaan) and the late Albert Vandergaast. Very much-loved wife of forty-five years to Henry Centen whom she married on August 13, 1977. Loving mother of Joanna (Marc) Yerrington, Michael (Kathryn) Centen, Carley (Stuart) Centen and Andrew (Jennifer) Centen. Proud grandmother of Elena, Audrey, Benjamin, Cora, Blake, Maisy, Felix, Leo, and soon to arrive baby Hemingway.

Jean will be fondly remembered by her siblings Gary (Marsha), George (Mary Ann), Linda (Matt), and Albert, along with her many nieces and nephews and mother-in-law Johanna (née Nabuurs), and as sister-in-law to George (Ginette), Perry, and Jocelyn (Angelo).

Jean was a talented, creative woman who brought beauty to our lives through her crafts in stained glass, card making, crochet, and gardening. She loved a good book, a game or puzzle (what is… Jeopardy!?) and traveling both near (s’mores over a campfire, anyone?) and far (most recently a Mediterranean cruise culminating in a trip across the Atlantic). After graduating with a diploma from Georgian College, she began her career caring for people with disabilities. She later took on varied roles as a homeschool teacher, school bus driver, baker (best carrot cake you’ve ever tasted), and in accounting. Most recently, she spent many years owning and operating Looking Glass House, a Bed and Breakfast in Stratford where guests enjoyed her hospitality and exceptional muffins. She also often volunteered her time for church and charity.

It was to her family and faith that Jean dedicated her life. She would do anything for her children and was never fuller with joy than when spending time with her grandchildren. She’ll be remembered in her happy place, surrounded by family, sitting by the water on a sunny summer day, enjoying a cup of tea like only Henry can make.

Henry and his family would like to sincerely thank the heart donor who gave us precious hope and final moments with Jean as well as all the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff of LHSC University Hospital for all their exceptional care; it is very much appreciated.

Friends and family are invited to Jean’s visitation on Thursday, June 15, 2023, from 2-4 pm. at the W. G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St, Stratford. At Jean's request there will not be a funeral service. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the PLN Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation through Jean’s obituary on the funeral home website. www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
