Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in St. Marys area and visitors to the town have more places to charge up.

Last month, four Level 2 charging posts – each with two ports – were installed in municipal parking lots, two in the Pyramid Recreation Centre parking lot and two in the Jones Street lot.

The new charging posts were installed as part of the Perth County Electric Pathway, which aims to improve access to electric vehicle chargers across St. Marys, Stratford, and Perth County.

The town already had a post installed at the train station.

“Level 2 chargers are ideal for residents who don’t have a charging station at home, commuters who work in town and day trippers,” the Town of St. Marys said in a news release.

An average electric vehicle will take four to 10 hours to charge using a Level 2 charger, the media release stated.

Charging will cost $2 per hour.

Parking spots with a charging station are reserved for EVs using them. Any other vehicles parked in those spots could be fined up to $120.

“These new chargers offer yet another incentive for people to visit the beautiful Town of St. Marys,” said Mayor Al Strathdee. “They are also a great asset for residents who own an EV and those considering one.”

The installation cost of a Level 2 port is approximately $7,500.

St. Marys is currently trying to secure funding for a Level 3 fast charger – which can cost upwards of $100,000 to install. It hopes to have one in place by 2026.
