Friday is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the women’s rights movement and to focus on issues still facing women today.

To coincide with the holiday, the local chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is hosting a breakfast.

“We stand in solidarity with women around the world who are living with the impact of conflict and its fallout on the world stage, in the workplace, in our communities and in their homes,” said Bettianne Hedges, president of CFUW, in a media release. “But we know too that women are the peacemakers and that they have developed an extensive set of skills and resources to buffer and resolve conflict on so many levels.”

The morning will explore the impact of conflict on women and the role they play in conflict resolution.

Darlene Bartha, manager of donor relations and major gifts for the Mennonite Central committee, and Allyson Larkin, chair of the department of social justice and peace studies at King’s University College, will be speaking at the event.

Bartha has worked with several civil society groups, visited developing countries, and “is on a mission to learn and live out peace and justice.”

At King’s University College, Larkin is currently researching peacebuilding through storytelling: researching the possibilities for peace with youth through autobiographical storytelling.

On Sunday, the Multicultural Association of Perth Huron is also hosting a discussion for International Women’s Day.

Asil Hamid and Southgate Councillor Monica Singh Soares will be guest speakers at the event, which takes place at the Stratford Rotary Complex from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
