Ontario Party candidate Sandy McGregor has worked with youth for at least half of his life.

He wants the next generation to inherit ‘a good country to live in’.

A Mount Forest resident for nine years, McGregor has followed Ontario Party leader Derek Sloan and the party’s Freedom, Family and Faith platform is one that resonates with him.

“I am a Christian and I believe in Christian values,” he told StratfordToday.

McGregor has worked for the past 21 years as a student supervision monitor, “kind of doing everything to keep the school secure”, he said, including steering youth to counsellors. He has also worked in a detention centre as a child and youth worker. He plans to retire, however, this summer.

"I am always sensitive to the needs of our youth, they are really honest people in how they talk about things.”

The Ontario Party was established in 2018. Sloan was elected to the House of Commons in 2019, representing Hastings-Lennox and Addington as a Progressive Conservative. He was expelled from the party in 2021. Sloan became leader of the Ontario Party in December of last year.

“We are a new Conservative party and we want to get back to the values of core conservatives that believe in core values," McGregor said. "The Progressive Conservatives have moved so far to the left (politically) that they are like the other parties.”

McGregor said people at the door on the campaign trail are listening and so far giving him a fair chance to express his beliefs.

“People do have concerns for where our government is going.”

McGregor is realistic about his chances in the June provincial election. “We are up against a giant but I think there are enough people out there who would be interested in changing things.”

“I am learning a lot. I am just out there fighting for the little guy.”
