Reta McKay was born in Gadshill on February 3, 1939. The youngest of three girls born to John and Hilda Doerr, her time was spent on the family farm and then at their home outside of Rostock. She married Alex McKay, spending 62 years farming with him in the Gore of Downie Township and raising their children: Doug (Ann Hawthorne), Linda (John Matthews) and Jim (Karin Behnke). Over the years, her family grew to seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was an active member of Avonton Presbyterian Church, the Ladies Auxiliary, a reading program volunteer at Downie Central Public School and with the Stratford Agricultural Society at fair time.
Reta is survived by her husband Alex, sister Marilyn Kreuter, brothers-in-law George Wicke and Ric Benjamin. Predeceased by her sister Elaine Wicke, brother-in-law Nelson McKay and his wife Patricia, brother-in-law Cliff Kreuter and sister-in-law Nancy Benjamin.
Visitation will be held at the W. G.
