West Region pole vault champion Tyson Cassone of Stratford District Secondary School is one of a half dozen track and field athletes from Stratford high schools competing at the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) track and field championships in Ottawa.
Cassone won the junior boy's pole vault for SDSS with a best effort of 3.75m at the recent OFSAA West Regional championships in Cambridge.
Also qualifying for the provincials Thursday to Saturday is Golden Bears teammate Jashanveer Singh, who took the silver medal in the novice boy's discuss with a best throw of 41.4m. Caden Diehl was third for SDSS in the novice boy's pole vault after clearing 3.05m.
Erika Lealess of St. Michael DSS won two events at the regional, finishing first in the senior girl's 400m in a time of 55.67 seconds and also won the 400m hurdles (1:02.33). Also qualifying from St. Michael were Tessa Burdett, first in novice girl's 80m hurdles (12.10).
Burdett also qualified in the 200m, finishing third in 27.23 seconds.
Brooke Wilhelm qualified via a third place finish in the junior girl's discuss with a best throw of 26.46m.
St. Michael at OFSAA slo-pitch tournament
After Huron-Perth conference and WOSSAA championships, St. Michael varsity girl's softball head to Dorchester for the provincial championships June 12-13.
St. Mike defeated South Huron DHS 8-5 in an "exciting" WOSSAA final in St. Thomas, coach Susan Dunn said, after earlier wins over St. Marys DCVI and Mitchell DHS. St. Mike is composed of 15 players from Grade 9-12.
