STRATFORD DITRICT SECONDARY SCHOOL
***********************
On Tuesday March 4, the Stratford District Secondary School Golden Bears punched their ticket to the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) girls curling provincial championships with a gold medal performance at WOSSAA.
In the semi-final game, held at the London Curling Club, the Bears beat London Central division champs London Saunders 11-3. In the gold medal game, London Southwest champs from Woodstock C.I. were looking for revenge from last year's WOSSAA loss to the Bears, but SDSS prevailed 11-2 to capture their second straight WOSSAA gold medal. The WOSSAA wins bring the season record for the Bears to a perfect 15-0 against high school competition.
The Stratford team is composed of skip Addison Hyatt (a grade 11 student), vice-skip Hailey Peters, second Deanna Halls (both grade 10 students), and newcomer Brooklyn Hyatt, a grade 9 student, playing lead. The team, coached by Brian Anderson, Paul Hyatt and teacher-coach Shane Restall, predominantly plays out of the Stratford Country Club, but also receives extensive support from the Tavistock Curling Club and Milverton Curling Club.
Last year, the Bears went 1-4 in pool play at OFSAA and failed to make the playoffs.
This year, the provincial championships are being held in Sarnia from March 19 to March 22. The Golden Bears open pool play on Wednesday afternoon against Bishop Allen Academy from Toronto. The Bears will be joined by 19 other girls teams from all over the province.
