Mitchell Blue Devils won the bronze medal over the weekend at the WOSSAA 'A' senior boy's basketball tournament.

Four teams took part at Woodstock Collegiate Institute, including the hosts, and London schools Holy Cross and Westminster.

The Blue Devils were off their game, per coach A.J. Moses, in a 52-49 semifinal loss against Holy Cross.

"It wasn’t meant to be," Moses said after the semifinal.

The Blue Devils were up by ten after the first quarter, down by three at the half and down by 11 to start the final quarter.

"Holy Cross played well but we missed breakaway layups and inside shots."

The team rebounded from that disappointment to win the bronze medal game 74-53 over Westminster. Woodstock C.I. was the favourite going in and didn't disappoint, beating Westminster 76-55 in their semifinal and Holy Cross 76-55 in the gold medal game.

Mitchell was without Kayden Vosper. The guard picked up two technicals in the Blue Devils Huron-Perth championship win last week, which led to a suspension at WOSSAA.

"That really hurt us," Moses said.

Mitchell finished undefeated in the regular season and capped that with a 64-54 win over Stratford DSS Golden Bears in the Huron-Perth championship.

Moses said everyone should be back except Vosper next year, so they are anticipating more good things.

The Golden Bears were scheduled to play at the WOSSAA 'AAA' senior boy's tournament today (Monday), weather permitting. The Golden Bears junior boy's basketball team is also competing at the 'AAA' tournament. They were undefeated in the regular season and beat Listowel 72-28 in the H-P final.

Also on the weekend, London South beat Stratford St. Mike's 3-0 in the WOSSAA 'AA' girls volleyball final, 28-30, 25-18, 25-22, 25-20. At the 'AAA' tournament, Parkside beat Stratford DSS 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 in the senior bronze medal game. Lucas beat Stratford DSS 25-12, 25-13, 25-12 in the junior bronze medal game.
