Staff shortages lead to emergency department service reductions

Pressures will continue throughout the summer, per Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) has announced temporary service reductions at both the Clinton Public Hospital and St. Marys Memorial Hospital emergency departments.

A news release issued by the HPHA states that “increased demands on the healthcare system, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, are leading to staffing vacancies. These pressures will continue throughout the summer.”

The upcoming service reductions will be as follows:

  • Clinton Public Hospital:
    • Saturday, Aug. 6 – emergency department will be closed
    • Sunday, Aug. 7 – emergency department will open at 8 a.m. and regular reduced hours of operation (8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily) will resume
  • St. Marys Memorial Hospital:
    • Saturday, Aug. 6 – emergency department will close at 5 p.m.
    • Sunday, Aug. 7 – emergency department will open at 7 a.m. and regular hours of operation (24 hours daily) will resume

The closest emergency departments to Clinton Public Hospital:

  • Seaforth – Seaforth Community Hospital
  • Goderich – Alexandra Marine and General Hospital
  • Exeter – South Huron Hospital
  • Wingham – LWHA– Wingham and District Hospital

The closest emergency departments to St. Marys Memorial Hospital:

  • Stratford – Stratford General Hospital
  • Exeter – South Huron Hospital
  • Ingersoll – Alexandra Hospital
  • London – LHSC– University Hospital or Victoria Hospital

Anyone requiring immediate medical attention should call 911.

Paramedics will remain available to the community and will re-route to the nearest available emergency department to ensure local residents continue to have access to the emergency services they need.
