Smoke 'pyrotechnic' ends school year early *Updated

Students at Stratford District Secondary School were evacuated Wednesday after a 'smoke pyrotechnic' was thrown into a garbage can in the school's technology hall.

Students and staff members were evacuated as a safety precaution.

There were no injuries reported, Stratford Fire Department told StratfordToday.

It was the last school day of the year and the incident occurred near the end of the school day, sources told StratfordToday.

Arrangements were made for students to pick up their belongings on Thursday.

A second incident occurred on school grounds outside of St. Michael Catholic Secondary School at about 7 p.m. Wednesday. A person lit a small garbage can on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished by Stratford Fire Department.

No injuries were reported.

Police are working with senior staff at both schools to identify who was involved.
