For the first time ever, the upcoming Skate Ontario Provincial Figure Skating Championships will be hosted in Stratford.

The event will take place at the Stratford Rotary Complex March 24-26 and spectators are welcome to attend.

"It is very exciting and we are looking forward to showcasing our city to people from around the province," club head coach Kevin Winter told StratfordToday.

Winter said the club's past success hosting their 'December Classic' events played a part in getting the provincials in the Festival City. The local skating club put in a bid to host the provincials, which are held in different locations each year.

More than 500 provincial series qualifying skaters from across Ontario are expected to attend, competing in men's and women's disciplines including singles, dance, pairs, and synchronized.

Winter said fans will get to see the best skaters up to age 21 that the province has to offer. Skaters qualified from 15 provincial series competitions held over the past five months. The provincials wrap-up the competitive season.

"We have been recruiting volunteers who will help make this a great experience for the skaters and parents."

Admission is $5 at the door for those aged 5 and older. Kids aged 4 and younger are admitted free.
