The public can soon book free kayak rentals as St. Marys' kayak loan service, the Yak Shack, returns on May 24.

The town said kayaks must be pre-booked on its website this year and time slots are shortened to two hours long, instead of three, due to demand.

Online bookings will open one week prior to available time slots, starting May 16.

It said Sunday bookings will become available in July and August.

Launched last summer, the service allows bookings for single-person kayaks for use on St. Marys waterways.

Paddlers can explore up to five kilometres of river routes offering views of St. Marys’ historic downtown, the Sarnia Bridge and countryside.

St. Marys said individuals can only book one time slot per person per week to allow everyone to enjoy the program.

It recommends the activity for children aged eight and older. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

A maximum of five kayaks will be available.

After completing online reservation, individuals can pick up keys, paddles and life jackets at the St. Marys Public Library at 15 Church St. N. prior to their timeslot.

The kayaks are stored at the Yak Shack, located at Milt Dunnell Field by the Lion's Park Pavilion.
