The City of Stratford will be holding its first household hazardous waste collection of the year this Saturday.

The collection will take place at the landfill site at 777 Romeo St. S. from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., according to a post on the city’s Facebook page.

Trained professionals will be on hand to receive things like paints, varnish, solvents, caulking, glue, fuels, antifreeze, brake fluid, used motor oil and filters, batteries, household cleaners like bleach and oven cleaners, fluorescent light bulbs/tubes, and propane tanks.

Starting at 9 a.m., vehicles waiting to drop off hazardous waste materials will enter the landfill site and then immediately turn right at the gravel road that runs around the perimeter of the site.

The collection depot is toward the east end of the landfill, and signs will be in place to direct traffic.

After dropping off materials, vehicles will continue along the gravel road and then turn right onto Lorne Avenue to exit the landfill site.

The landfill site opens at 8 a.m. for regular waste dropoff, but hazardous waste will not be accepted until 9 a.m.

The city is advising residents to consider delaying a trip until later in the afternoon, as there is a longer collection time compared to previous years.

Additionally, participants are being asked to not exit a vehicle while waiting to drop off materials, for their own safety.

More household hazardous waste collection days are planned for this year. A schedule will be posted as soon as details have been finalized.
