With a passion for good food, Al Fresco is returning to Stratford with expanded dining options.

“We are really thrilled to welcome Al Fresco back for this season. It is a fantastic opportunity for our city to celebrate a unique and safe way to enjoy takeout and picnic options from local restaurants,” said April Murray, destination brand manager for Destination Stratford.

Last year, the dining initiative assisted local businesses impacted by pandemic restrictions. With indoor dining restrictions in place, Al Fresco helped businesses with various takeout options.

Launched in 2021, Stratford dining includes 143 take-out restaurants, 30 patio options and 84 dine-in locations. Safe outdoor dining and take-out have proven to be successful with many restaurants creating custom-made picnic options.

“Al Fresco has provided a safe activity for both businesses and locals to enjoy. We received tons of positive feedback and are very fortunate to have such a welcoming space,” said Murray.

Located at various spots around the city, Al Fresco allows people to pair their takeout meals with an alcoholic beverage, in accordance with a city bylaw. Beverages can be enjoyed at designated times and within Al Fresco grounds.

“This has to take place within the designated Al Fresco areas and through participating restaurants,” said Murray. “We had a very positive response about this initiative from the locals, restaurants and visitors.”

Destination Stratford, the city’s tourism agency, will add 35 recycled plastic picnic tables. Market Square will have fewer picnic tables than previous years, with 17 tables being installed. These tables will be placed on the perimeter of Market Square, allowing for community events to still take place. There are 15 tables permanently installed on Tom Patterson Island.

“New to this year is we have expanded to the south-shore of the park from Huron Street Bridge right up to Queen’s Park,” said Murray.

For restaurants participating in the dining initiative, the City of Stratford is requiring a certification of insurance prior to receiving signage and posters from Destination Stratford. Customers are required to keep their receipts while dining at designated Al Fresco locations.
