LETTER: Why pay for coyote pelts if people are already hunting them?

'Why is it necessary to now consider making hunters buy a license and why would the county be willing to pay $100 of tax payers money'

StratfordToday received the following Letter to the Editor from reader David Jasper in response to our story Perth county is looking at coyote hunting program.

So, Perth County is looking at a possible by law for the hunting of coyote. The Perth County CAO, Lori Wolfe, says “We would put a limit on it and that you need a license to go out and hunt these types of animals."

The article goes on to give an example of such a bylaw as follows: The recommended compensation would be $100 per coyote pelt and the hunting of coyotes would be permitted within a 10km radius of where livestock was killed. There would be a maximum of 10 coyotes per killed livestock.

Meanwhile, Councillor Jerry Smith indicated that he hunts every year with a group of hunters and are allowed to shoot coyotes and not report their kill. According to the councillor, (his group alone) shoot between 80 and 100 coyotes during deer season. So my question is why is it necessary to now consider making hunters buy a license and why would the county be willing to pay $100 of tax payers money for each pelt?
