Applications for an incentive program helping dairy farmers will soon re-open.

The Dairy Sustainability Incentive Program was launched by Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) and Starbucks Canada, in collaboration with Farm Credit Canada (FCC) and Lactanet, in an effort to help advance sustainability in the dairy sector, according to a media release.

This program rewards farmers who are adopting environmental best management practices, encouraging sustainable farming through annual incentives of up to $2,000 to FCC customers who meet select criteria.

Payments are calculated as a portion of a farmer’s lending with FCC, according to the program’s website.

Starbucks, which has already donated $500,000 to the project, will be providing additional funding to create two new categories for the program: Top Achieving and Most Improved.

“The support of Starbucks will help recognize more farmers’ commitment to environmental management and show Canadians that sustainability begins with the people producing their food,” said David Wiens, president of DFC. “When farmers set out to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, we knew we would not go it alone.”

DFC represents the country’s dairy producers, striving to create stable conditions for the dairy sector in Canada.

It has set a goal of net-zero emissions from farm-level dairy production by 2050.

Applications for the incentive program open on May 21.
